Piazza
There are some occasions in class where students are afraid to speak up, whether it is to answer a question, ask a question, or share a comment. The creator of the student centered question and answer website, Piazza, knew what it felt like to be one of those students that would rather sit in the back than speak up in class. To try and prevent this from happening to other students, she created Piazza, where students can post questions, answer questions, or give feedback publicly or anonymously.
Students can learn from each through their interactions on this website. Instead of struggling through problems on their own, students can turn to the advice of their peers. They can exchange questions and tips on how to solve certain questions and problems. The students’ questions are updated in real time so that they can solve the problem that much faster without having to scroll through pointless website links. Homework assignments, lecture notes, and important links are all available to students in the course resource section posted there by teachers.
This website can also help teachers to understand where their classes stand on certain subjects and what they need assistance with. Teachers can view student participation to see who frequently asks and answers questions, edits material, or who is more comfortable reading to themselves. To get in touch with their classes, teachers can post announcements to their sites that all the students will be notified about. Teachers can also send polls out to students after a lecture has been given to see what they thought of it.
This site is also available on iOS and Android devices so that students and teachers can be on the go while still responding to each other and their peers.
This site could be very useful in university settings where students might only have a few friends, or none, in a class that they can go to for help. Being able to post anonymously on the site helps people to feel like they are the only ones who don’t understand what is going on.
