Mitch McConnell is the Minority Leader of the United States Senate and arguably one of the most prominent and powerful Republicans in the nation. He has been in Office as the Senior Senator from Kentucky since 1985 and has held his current leadership position for nearly eight years since 2006. Yet this November all of such an impressive tenure hangs by a thread.
McConnell who is up for re-election is neck-in-neck in the polls with his Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes. A recent CBS News Poll conducted August 18-September 2 puts McConnell ahead with a slight lead of 5% over Grimes, with exact numbers of 47%- McConnell, 42%- Grimes.
Lundergan Grimes, the stunning 35-year old Secretary of State from Kentucky hails from Democratic Royalty and is backed by Hollywood money. Her father Jerry Lundergan is the former Democratic Party Chairman of Kentucky and also served as a State Representative. Alison has without a doubt made her family proud by putting McConnell in the fight of his life. She has aggressively gone after McConnell’s record on women’s issues, such as his opposition to the Violence Against Women Act, and has painted the incumbent as a Washington Insider who made himself a millionaire while in office.
McConnell on the other hand has attacked Grimes’s stance on coal and healthcare. He has successfully crafted the image of Grimes as an anti-coal Liberal in a very pro-coal state, and claims she will act as the President’s lapdog on policy issues such as the very unpopular Affordable Care Act.
No words of unkindness have been spared in this race. Only time will tell as the days creep closer to Election Day who is winning the war of words in the Kentucky race of the decade.
