I think outreach to young people is an important (and fun) part of being an engaged engineer and student. In conjunction with the Geotechnical Student Organization at VT, I’ve been able to do outreach at elementary schools both here in Blacksburg and abroad. It’s an awesome experience. I’ve added some pictures below. We teach students about civil engineering and geotechnical engineering in particular. Then we help them build an MSE wall. It’s especially to watch them (and their teachers) stand on the wall when we are done. The teachers sometimes get pretty into it (see the photos).
