Course Reflection Post

During this past semester I have learned how to express myself in creative ways such as drawing, photography, and through digital media. This class has definitely helped me reconnect to my creative side, which I feel I have been a bit out of touch with since I was younger. I really enjoyed the video project because I always wondered what went into making videos. It interests me because I have always had interests in starting a youtube channel. I also enjoyed being able to talk about a subject that related to what I want to study and pursue as a career. Looking back, I think a collaborative assignment would have been very beneficial and fun for the class.

Mini Movie

My mini movie was about my time in college. It was supposed to just be little clips of my friends and I studying together, but I ended up adding clips of us just hanging out or going out to eat. It was really fun getting all the clips for it just because I found some videos that I didn’t even know I had. It was also really nice to look back on some really fun times I have had at school.Clips21-03-22_10-57 (1)

Pop-up Book

For my book alteration project, I made a pop-up book. The book is supposed to represent the journey of life. The pop-ups represent all the different things we as people have to deal with in life. These include themes on religion, old age, war, and nature. The actual book is a children’s book, which I think is fitting because it represents all the things a child can experience as they start to open their “Book of Life”.

Favorite Film(s)

I have two favorite films. They are SALT and Red Sparrow. I often refer to these movies as being opposite sides of the same coin because they are both about Russian spies. SALT just has a lot more action while Red Sparrow is more about the mind games. Both of these movies had me glued to the screen the whole time and they both star very powerful female leads as the main characters as Red Sparrow stars Jennifer Lawrence and SALT stars Angelina Jolie. SALT was supposed to come out with a sequel, but unfortunately never did. The reasons I like both of these movies is mostly due to the plot. Both movies have so many twists and turns, and that’s what makes them so amazing.

My Favorite Book and Why

My favorite book would have to be Sea Glass by Maria V. Snyder. It is about a female witch who goes through a lot of betrayal and backstabbing as a teenager. She is really just trying to figure out who she is and who to trust all while being in this rollercoaster ride of a magical story, so, of course, she goes through a lot, but she manages to get closer to finding herself than she was in the beginning. Sea Glass is the second book in a series of books called “Glass” that are also all about the teenage witch. Sea Glass was my favorite though because she grew the most as a person and it was very inspiring to ten-year-old me.

Evolution of 3D Representation

We have been working on 3D representation the past few weeks. First we started with drawings, we then moved on to bringing our drawings to life and improving them. My first drawings missed the concept of the assignment, so I had to come up with a new drawing that accurately represented the concepts we were talking about in class. Below are the second drawing and my two attempts to bring it to life. The first attempt was done by crumpling a sheet of paper into a mound-like shape and then taping the base of it to a larger piece of paper with double-sided tape. The second attempt was done by cutting two sheets of letter size paper into strips and then using double-sided tape to tape them together and to another sheet of paper.

My Favorite 2D Artist and Why

My favorite 2D artist would have to be my little sister, Naima. She started drawing when she was about six or seven years old. Her style is heavily influenced by manga and anime. She actually has a few comics she is writing on her own and with a friend. A lot of her art lately has had to do with her characters from these different comics. She is my favorite 2D artist because I genuinely like all of her art and feel that I would like it even if she was not related to me. Also, her imagination is amazing to me. She reached the typing limit on her “Notes” app on her iPad typing out the storyline of one her stories and still had more to go. She is also very passionate as she can go on for hours and hours talking about all her characters and the stories that accompany them. On the last picture she has a list of different symbols on the left hand side. These are all the “stats” for her character that are important in the story she is writing.

Photography

It was really convenient that it snowed because I got to take some pretty cool pictures of different things on campus. The snow just adds another element that would otherwise not be there. The architecture around campus has such a cool Victorian era feel to it already, but the snow almost transports me back in time. I tried my best to sort of follow the rule of thirds, especially with the pictures of the different buildings on campus, but it was kind of difficult because my glasses were fogging up and I was always on the way to go somewhere else. The picture of the hallway is from the hall I live in, and I just thought it was cool to see because it reminded me of those “How to Draw Books” when they teach you about how to draw things from a distance and about perspective. The picture of the messy desk looked a lot cooler when I was looking at it with my eyes, but I tried my best to capture what I was seeing right before I took the picture. A lot of these pictures were taken while I was doing something else and I would see something at specific angle and think “Oh that looks kind of cool” and quickly just snap a picture.

What Inspires Me?

I am inspired by how my dad leaves the house at 2 AM five to six days a week to go unload a semitruck for twelve to sixteen hours. What inspires me is how my mom works three to four twelve-hour shifts a week dealing with the sickest patients in her hospital. I am inspired by how after my dad’s draining shift he has the drive to go clean carpets for four more hours. What inspires me is how my mom fills the rest of her week being the rock of her side of the family whether it be helping her family members with their financial, personal, health, or professional problems. I am inspired by how after his long week, he still offers to help the neighbors cut down trees, roof their sheds, and stain their fences. What inspires me is how my mom came from another country at the age of sixteen and put herself through college. I am inspired by how my dad grew up dirt poor in Kimball, Nebraska and now we live in one of the better neighborhoods in our area. I am inspired by hard work, perseverance, determination, discipline, and compassion. My parents are what inspire me.
