The Nuclear Energy Institute is very concerned with nuclear energy.
NEI’s Mission: The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) is the policy organization of the nuclear energy and technologies industry and participates in both the national and global policy-making process. NEI’s objective is to ensure the formation of policies that promote the beneficial uses of nuclear energy and technologies in the United States and around the world. http://www.nei.org/
The NEI is concerned with protecting the environment, producing a reliable and affordable energy source, producing more nuclear power plants, ensuring safety and security around nuclear supplies, and having clean disposal methods of used materials.
The Department of Energy is also interested in nuclear energy in similar was as the NEI.
Senator Jim Webb is concerned with nuclear energy. He is a senator for the state of Virginia and he is a very big supporter of nuclear energy. He created the Clean Energy Act of 2009 which would invest 20 billion dollars over 10 years in nuclear energy. http://webb.senate.gov/newsroom/pressreleases/02-16-2011-01.cfm
Although nuclear power is a relatively safe power source, there is always the possibility of natural disaster. The effects of natural disaster on nuclear power plants can be much more devastating than the effects on coal fired power plants. I live about 15 minutes away from Lake Anna. In august of this year there was an earthquake in the area and the nuclear power plant on the lake was shut down. Luckily, there was no damage to the reactors but if there was, the results could have been catastrophic. There were nuclear disasters at Chernobyl in 1986, and Three Mile Island in 1979. Both of these disasters contaminated surrounding areas of the plants. For this reason all citizens should be concerned with nuclear power because a disaster could effect everyone.
