For the last group project, we had to create a 3 ft by 5 ft poster that explains and show our solutions for problems.
Designing a poster was one of the most fun and thinking job and I really enjoyed it.
Even though many students use illustrator for designing a poster, I used Indesign. I got used to it more since Martha assigned a poster project with using Indesign. I believe they both work fine for the process and result.
The hardest part when designing a poster was trying to visualize the space and size of the pictures and texts that are going on the poster. Since the size of the computer monitor is small, estimating how large it is going to be on the actual 3 ft by 5 ft poster was not an easy job. Also, it was complicated to create patterns of grids on the poster to fit different sizes of pictures and amount of text.
What I learned from the last poster project was that grid are what makes the poster look clean and nice and well organized. Even though they might be seen on the poster, human eyes find those patterns and similarity on the poster and feel comfortable while reading through the text and pictures.
It was another learning process which I believe that it will make me a great architect.
I have never used lathe before when I used the wood shop. It was the machine that seemed hard to use and get used to it.
However, for my natural phenomenon project, I decided to use lathe to make wooden bells.
It was a simple project but a time consuming work. Compare to the time and effort that I put in to the work, the final product seemed simple and easy to make.
It is true that as I got used to it, it only took about 2 hours to make one bell however, I could never stop paying attention to what I was doing and where I am cutting.
I see a lot of possible things I can do with lathe and I would like to try to make other wood art pieces when it is available. It was a fun and interesting project that I will recommend other people to try and use lathe.
My dream if I become an architect is to use my talent to serve and help others. My dream started when I went to mission trip from school. The organization was called Casas Por Cristo which means house for Christ.
I could not believe that our group will be able to build a house in 6 days since we were only 11th grade students and no one in the group had any skill to build the house. Some of my friends did not even know how to use drills nor shovels.
However, we were able to build the house with precise guide and instructions. It was amazing to see what we did as a group for people who needed help. The best moment was when we gathered in the house and gave the key to the family.
I still remember their smile and tears. And I remember the promise that I made to myself. I will build for others.
stories and Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental is a five star hotel currently being built into the side of an abandoned quarry in the Songjiang District of Shanghai.
The building is designed by the British firm Aktins and it is going to have 19 stories and 380 rooms.
Just like any other breath taking building projects, when I first looked at this building, I wanted visit and stay at the place for a week.
It was very interesting to see how elevator of the building reminds waterfall and shape and texture of the building mimics the texture of the cliff. Roof of the building is also the entrance of the building and it goes under the ground. Because of the site’s special characteristic, Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental was able to achieve special effects for visitors and tourists.
I believe that the best part of the building is the view that can be seen on the boat. The atmosphere of the building has characteristics of rock. water, and grass which makes me feel very comfortable and relaxing. This features definitely maximized the purpose and intention of hotel.
‘Consider materiality in a set of spatial volume
This year’s competition’s prompt took me a while to figure out what would be the best material that fulfills the prompt.
I picked Bristol to show materiality in a set of spatial volume.
Bristol is very interesting paper. It is a common object and thick enough to show strong movement on surface.
One reason I picked Bristol paper is that its curved white surface is very clean and smooth and fascinating.
I tried to show resistance force of the paper when paper is rolled by creating a space in between the joint of the paper, and created interesting spatial volume underneath with paper’s characteristic: flexibility.
For ‘Specific Site Design Build’ project, we had to find a site where construction of something can well interacts with natural phenomenon at the location.
I believe that the construction’s interaction with natural phenomenon can be shown when the construction dissolves in nature.
And it can be well dissolved if the construction understands how people see, feel, and interact with that specific nature and place.
Site that I chose is wide and plane, and it is surrounded by dorms and trees.
Since the place is surrounded, it feels very protected and safe, and a great place to gather.
This site is where many students walk by and gather for food and sports; however, the ground is too muddy during rainy days and the place cannot be used during snow days.
I would like to use wood and natural resources to make something to make this place better for students.
More research will be made what type and kind of construction will make this place better.
Glenn Murcutt is an architect who cared most about nature and surroundings when designing and constructing a building.
His buildings were designed with consideration of winds, sun, and nature.
For example, Magney house was built with full consideration with nature, climates, and surroundings around the house.
The curved V shaped roof has special affects for change in climate and weather. lower side of the roof stops the cold wind during winter, and higher side of the house allows sunlight in the house while circulates air naturally.
Also, north side of the wall is made with Low E-Glass and blinds so that the sunlight naturally comes inside the house while other side of the wall is made with three layers of masonry wall for cold and strong winds during winter.
On the roof, drainage gutter is placed so that rain drops can be collected and recycled.
The floor of the house is insulated that the heat can be kept in the house at cold night.
Magney house was a great example that considered natural winds, sun, and materials of nature to create eco-friendly house.
When working with Rhino, knowing commands and functions of many tools help you to make any objects in high quality.
Something that seems complicated can be easily made by knowing commands and what they do.
For example, for this bowl, I only had to construct a ‘L’ shape lines with thickness.
After that, I used a command, Join, to put them as a whole and used another command, Sweep, to make it rotate and create 3 dimensional bowl.
I see a lot of possibilities through Rhino and I am excited that I will be able to make many interesting object or buildings by studying this software.
Before we got into poster design, we had to get use to different software that will help us to design and create outlines for the project.
First, I chose a page that has consistency and similarity in both pages.
As I first looked at the page, it was very well balanced and well organized.
I really liked how two similar pictures were placed diagonally creating both balanced and unbalanced feelings on pages.
It was very interesting to see how vertical lines of texts aligned with edges of images creating pattern, simplicity, and balance.
This exercise has helped me to get used to the InDesign software and also to see how hidden patterns make pages uniform and concrete.
