For the first time, Virginia Tech’s Hospitality and Tourism Management Department offered students a chance to complete CHIA (Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics) as yet another way to build competitive resumes. The 16 participants in the class, made up of Virginia Tech students and local industry professionals, completed the program with a 100% pass rate.
According to Dr. Rick Perdue, HTM faculty who taught the workshop. “The certification is a joint program offered by Smith Travel Research (STR), the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (EI) and ICHRIE.”
In order to be certified, each student was required to review approximately 8 hours of online materials, attend an 8 hour workshop, and successfully complete the certification exam.
“I thought the CHIA workshop was a great combination of learning and refreshment! Dr. Perdue did a great job of talking us through the slides with enthusiasm and…after each section we covered we were able to quiz ourselves on what we just learned.” said Ella Wade, a senior who completed the certification.
“For students interested in any dimension of hotel management or tourism destination management, the certification is increasingly recognized as an important qualification. This trend will only get stronger” said Dr. Perdue.
