On November 13th, four Virginia Tech Hospitality and Tourism Management Students were given the chance to deliver their Market Analysis of Charlotte, NC as a part of the national student STR Competition during the New York Hotel Show. Allison Toupin, Alfred Lam, Edward DeDecker, and Morgan Mosteller, have worked on the intense research project for the presentation all semester in preparation for the competition under the guidance of Mr. Parsons.
“It definitely opened my eyes to an entirely new part of the industry; one that, before this project, I was mostly unaware of. The project allowed me to sharpen my analytics skills, and also taught me so much about what really makes up a hotel market” said Allison Toupin.
The project not only involved the presentation of STR data, but analyzing the complex market of Charlotte.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity to really engage with STR data and apply what I have been learning in the classroom for the last few years. As someone looking to go into Revenue Management, it has given me a better vocabulary for industry terms, increased my comfort level with analytics, and given me experience that has proven valuable in interviews” said Morgan Mosteller.
In order to qualify for the competition, the team had to submit a video of their presentation. After their submission, they were one of the selected few invited to attend the competition at the New York Hotel Show. The team placed 7th out of a total 25 submissions, as well as rewarding each student with invaluable experience.
“I know that getting this type of experience while I was here is definitely going to do a lot for my future career. If anyone has any interest in learning more about how analytics are used in the hospitality industry, I would absolutely tell them to make sure they enter this competition” said Toupin.
