This year the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging, and Travel Association (VRLTA) held their inaugural “Ordinary Awards Ceremony.” VRLTA created an award specifically for students entitled the Rising Pineapple Award: Hospitality Student of the Year. This award is for a high school or college student who has made “extraordinary contributions to Virginia’s hospitality and tourism industry through his/her studies, an internship program, or paid position.”
Virginia Tech Hospitality and Tourism Management senior Jenna Wines won this prestigious award. She was co-nominated by Dr. Nancy McGehee, Department Head, Hospitality and Tourism Management, and staff at Richmond Region Tourism for her field study work this summer. Jenna interned in the marketing department, and was applauded for her exemplary work. This included creating a Snapchat filter for several major youth sports lacrosse tournaments, gaining over 140 thousand impressions across the country.
