In my last blog post for this class I am thinking about all of the things that I did throughout and what was useful for me and interesting for me. This class was a huge challenge for me because it forced me to step way outside of my comfort zone for projects and create newer and more interesting and engaging mediums rather than just an academic paper. Even though I would rather bang out a 7 page paper than make a video I found this class illuminating in the different aspects of how the media and social medias are effecting academics and students and even teachers in this generation. My favorite project this semester was probably the Tap Essay. I found that medium the most interesting and with the best outcome for me. Overall I would recommend this class to other English majors because a lot of the new writing is digital now and we need to be able to know how to effectively write and interpret things that way.

  • The Setup

Who are you and what do you do?

    – I am Haley Chadduck and I am a student hoping to become an editor.

    What hardware do you use?

    – I have a 2010 13″ MacBook Pro, that I think is on the outs. It is slowing down and freezing up but I am hoping it will last me until I graduate undergrad and then maybe I will upgrade to a new Macbook Pro when I start grad school. I have a Kindle Fire and an iPhone 5 to do my reading and other kinds of things online.

    And what software?

    – In all honesty I am not very technologically advanced so I have no idea what software I use, and I don’t really care as long as it works.

What would be your dream setup?

    – I would like a bigger screen than the 13″ and I wish it was a little bit lighter but as far as functionality my setup right now is good for what I am doing.

  • Blogging

Posted on December 10th, 2013 Haley No comments

This blog is my first attempt ever at a blog. I find that I do not like sitting down and typing out what is going on in my life. Mostly because I feel like I sound pathetic and whiney when I tell about how hard something is for me and I don’t like sounding like that. I also find it hard to remember to do it on a daily basis and therefore ended up leaving this assignment until the last minute which I hate doing also. I also feel like I run out of things to write about and end up rambling on about things that are unimportant. I admire people who can sit and write their feelings and things down on the internet to share, I don’t even like sharing my papers that I write. I don’t take criticism very well, I tend to take it too personally and don’t like to be judged, which is what I feel like a blog is.

  • Brochure

Posted on December 10th, 2013 Haley No comments

Designing Documents for Print is a difficult and creative class. The last project I have completed to date was a brochure for the History MA department here at Virginia Tech. They gave us 6 pages of information to put onto the brochure as well as a couple of pictures and logos to go on it as well. It urned out that fitting all of the information into the brochure was the easy part. My teacher seems hard to please and even though the client will ultimately pick the brochure they want to use my professor will still be grading our work. I worked with a partner and we ending up getting something that looks good and is readable and effective. Hopefully we will “win” the competition of which brochure gets picked.

  • Client Work

Posted on December 10th, 2013 Haley No comments

For many of these upper level classes there are many client projects. I did one for Technical editing and style, one for Designing Docs, and will probably have many more in the future. I did a client project where my dad was the client and it was well received by him and his company but not by my teacher. I edited an entire employee handbook for him and it was really badly done so it took a lot of time and effort to edit. It was 28 pages long and when there were a few oversights my teacher took off a lot of points for that. The client project done for Designing Docs has not been edited or graded yet but I will update when I know.

  • Identity Package

Posted on December 10th, 2013 Haley No comments

For my final project for my Designing Documents for Print class, I am creating an identity package for a Journeyman Blacksmith. Being the noncreative person that I am, I am having a hard time coming up with a concept. I can’t think of a design that would be appropriate yet different and interesting.

My infographic for the same class was met with disappointment and made me a little bit discouraged for future projects and now I have no idea where to even start for the ID package. Hopefully this will be a better outcome. I have a whole week until it is due so I will be hard at work trying to figure something out.

  • Down to the Wire

As the semester comes to an end I find myself scrambling to get everything finished. My final project for my Designing Documents for Print class is not even started, the one for this class is a mere concept and my final paper for Women’s Lit is due tomorrow and I am barely halfway there. HELP!

  • Medium

Posted on December 10th, 2013 Haley No comments

For this last W&DM project we get to choose our own format for our Scholarly Webtext, letting us be as creative as we can be. I haven’t decided which form I am going to use for my essay because I do not think there are a lot of picture options for me to use with Internet Privacy so Storify would not be a good venue for it. I have been looking at using Medium. I explored it in class today and it seems like it is going to be the best way to publish this topic. It is a place where you can just write but also add media in with it. Hopefully this will be the best way to depict the information that I have found. Update to come!

  • iPad Project

Posted on December 9th, 2013 Haley No comments

For this class, we were given iPads for the entire semester. It was a cool concept when I first got it but as the semester wore on I realized how much I not only didn’t use it but didn’t need it. I was almost too scared to break it and scratch it to use it. I would rather use my computer to look something up, to create something, or to type, but I also use my iPhone more than I used the iPad, it was more portable and didn’t need to be connected to wifi to hook up to the internet.

Overall I do not think that the iPad was necessary for this class because we really only used it for one project and even then it was not necessary to use it because we had to create the project on the computer and it could only be viewed on the iPad. Having it for the semester did not make me want to run out and get one for myself.

  • Distraction

Posted on December 9th, 2013 Haley No comments

Trying to write these final papers, finish these final projects and study for my finals is the time I find Facebook to be the most distracting thing about my life. Even more distracting than my 7 month old puppy who wants to play constantly. It is the easiest and most effective procrastination tool. I find new and interesting (except not really that interesting) ways to use and abuse this social media app. Besides my kindle it is the most commonly used screen I own. It makes me lack motivation and makes me want to do anything other than the assignments that I am supposed to be doing, like writing this blog post instead of writing my 10 page term paper that is due on Wednesday. Some college students choose to deactivate their accounts during exam time, and other use blocking applications such as SelfControl to block access to certain websites for up to 2 hours so they almost have to concentrate on their work.
