My Qualms About Twitter

Recently I have been feeling as though everyone around me is addicted to Twitter. People love to post their thoughts, respond to other tweets, favorite tweets, and re-tweet. I have heard recently that people in my major (Communication) could benefit from using social media accounts to demonstrate the ability to network.  I have a twitter account for my writing and digital media class, but I was very reluctant to create it. At this point, I am trying to figure out how to accept this form of social media as a part of every day life.

My freshman year of college, I hesitantly obtained a twitter account after listening to my friends talk about how great it was and how they would really like to be able to tag my account in their tweets. I thought it would be an interesting way to keep up with what is going on in my friends’ lives, along with celebrity gossip of course. However, what I found was that people share WAY too much on this form of social media. It’s almost as though they have forgotten that they are not writing in a personal journal, but they are sending their thoughts out to anyone and everyone on the Internet. Their tweets go into a database and they will NEVER disappear, even if they are deleted. People tweet with no regard as to who might see their tweets later. The examples that I always think about are the tweets about alcohol and crazy nights out. Are people just oblivious to the fact that future employers can find this information?

I am not sure what is going on with Twitter. Am I missing out by not enjoying this medium of communication? I might never know because I can’t find a way to embrace it get more involved in it. I think I might need to start looking at the positive aspects instead of worrying about all of my issues with it.
