I Want to Participate in the Health Professions Evaluation Committee (HPEC) Process This Spring. What Do I Need to Know?

Health Professions Advising (HPA) has added the page Health Professions Evaluation Committee (HPEC) Process which steps you though a timeline from October 2017 through the due-date of the HPEC application materials (Jan. 31, 2018 at 5 pm). This page is available on HPA’s course on Canvas – the HPA Hub. If you are planning to participate in the HPEC process and haven’t joined the HPA Hub, please complete the request.

Please read the page in its entirety as there are multiple steps to the process. I’d like to highlight a few things you could/should be doing now to prepare. Let’s work backward from Jan. 31 so that you can determine what you’ll need to get done (note: this is not a complete list).

January 31, 2018, 5 pm – Last day to deliver your completed hard-copy (paper) HPEC Application packet to the HPA office in the Smith Career Center. You will also complete the online Canvas assignment by uploading a duplicate digital version of what you’ll deliver to us:

  • completed HPEC Application form (available Dec. 4 on the HPA Hub)
  • up-to-date resume
  • unofficial VT transcript showing grades through fall 2017
  • unofficial transcripts from all institutions from which you received post-secondary credit (ex. D.E. credits)
  • ALSO: in order to qualify you must also have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 completed assessments (see documentation for the HPEC Assessment Portal)

Early-mid January 2018 – HPA will start accepting your completed HPEC materials (see above). You don’t need to wait until Jan. 31, 2018, to submit – but take your time so that you present your best self. Your interviewers will review all of your submitted materials prior to your interview.

December 4, 2017 – The HPEC Application Form will be made available. You’ll have almost two months to complete this so take your time! It is a PDF document that you’ll need to download then edit and save in Adobe each time you access it.  If you’ve done an advising packet then you’ve gotten a hint of the types of questions we’ll ask (experiences in clinical, volunteering, leadership, employment, etc.) AND your personal statement

Now – what should be you doing and where can you get assistance?

  1. Register your assessors using the HPEC Assessment Portal. You’ll need a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 completed assessments by the Jan. 31 deadline. Remember the courtesy of a four-week turn-around for your assessor to complete your assessment (they’ve got busy lives too) so consider this lead time!
  2. Work on your personal statement (it’s a part of the completed HPEC application packet). Consider reviews at Career and Professional Development during daily walk-in hours (M-F, 12 – 3) or during a one-on-one appointment or visit the Writing Center.
  3. Your resume is another integral part of the completed HPEC application packet. Start now – and request a review at Career and Professional Development during daily walk-in hours (M-F, 12-3) or during a one-on-one appointment. Remember that a health professions resume can be longer than one page. Need to get started?   4. Transcripts – if you attended any other post-secondary institutions and took credit, even D.E. credits from high school, you will need an unofficial copy of the transcript for your completed packet (hint: you’ll need to do this, but with official copies, when you apply to your health professions graduate program). Think about winter/holiday breaks  – if you wait too long then the institutions may be closed.
  5. (Optional) Review your self-evaluation . with an HPA advisor during regular HPA walk-in hours (Tues. 11-2, Wed., 1-3:30) to talk about your readiness for participation in the HPEC process

So, lots of things you can be working on now – the self-evaluation review will help you decide if this is your year to participate in the HPEC process but it is just one of the steps.
