Twenty (20) SEMSS Undergraduate Student Travel Awards will be given to undergraduate students who are interested in exploring careers as physician- scientists. These travel awards are funded by a R15 grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIH/NIGMS) and will consist of $175 stipend ($75 to cover hotel cost for your Saturday (11/18) night hotel stay (Emory Conference Center hotel) and $100 to offset any additional travel/conference expense)
Applications are evaluated on:
• The quality and originality of research project.
• The student’s contribution to the research project.
• The candidate’s potential as a physician-scientist.
• The candidate’s access to SEMSS (i.e. distance from conference location, lack of local
undergraduate institution support for meeting, travel expenses, etc).
Eligibility:
• Students must be authors on an abstract submitted to SEMSS.
• Student must be able to attend SEMSS and present a poster based on the submitted abstract.
• Students must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student and have not received their Bachelor’s degree prior to the SEMSS conference.

All components of the Travel Award Application will be entered onto the SEMSS Registration Website.
You will be required to provide the following information:
1) Personal information:
• Name, email, and college or university
• Current year in school
• Gender, race and ethnicity (optional)
• Mode of travel to Birmingham (driving/flying)
• If you are interested in sharing a hotel room with another travel award winner
2) Abstract:
• Preference will be given to students who are first author on the abstract.
• Submit your abstract with the travel award application and submit your abstract under “Abstract submission”
3) A personal statement (300 word maximum) explaining:
• The candidate’s contribution to the project.
• The candidate’s future career plans.
• The relevance of the SEMSS experience to the candidate’s future career plans.
4) A resume or CV, highlighting activities demonstrating the student’s potential as a physician-scientist.

Application deadline is September 15, 2017. Early applications are encouraged, as travel awards will be made on a rolling basis.
