Finals Week: Controversial Issues

This semester I took an Honors Colloquium called “Controversial Issues in Science and Society.” I would highly recommend this class to anyone looking for a good discussion of current events, politics, ethics, and critical thinking. For my, the most significant element of the class was the chance it offered to really examine how opinions on scientific issues are formed, and to re-evaluate my own opinions as I realized certain logical fallacies in my reasoning.

Our final project was to submit a portfolio of news clippings pertaining to the issues we discussed in class. Here is a story I found particularly interesting:

Northern Ireland’s abortion laws are among the strictest in Europe. The publicity brought to the Republic by this case has raised some questions as to whether a change of policy is in order, either in the letter of the law or the enforcement of it.
