Are part-time faculty at American universities and colleges living near or below the federal poverty line?
Yesterday, the British “news website” the Guardian published an article on its website www.theguardian.com titled “Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars.” This story is getting plenty of reactions on the internet. You can read more on https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/28/adjunct-professors-homeless-sex-work-academia-poverty.
As a PhD student, and maybe a future adjunct myself, I am perplexed and marveled at the prospect of a low paying teaching career, working long hours without the security of a full-time job, no financial stability and lack of benefits. Or, may be, this is what is expected from a new Ph.D. graduate until one can find a job as a tenure-track professor. I hope the plight of adjuncts do not translate into making a doctoral degree a path to nowhere.
