Comment on The Corn Campaign by abishop

Good post. Much like annapope, I hadn’t given corn much thought as an unfamiliar crop internationally since it’s so prevalent in America. We’re so used to eating corn flakes, popcorn, corn syrup (which is used in practically everything), etc. in our society. However, I find it really interesting to note how the Soviets had to market corn to be more appealing to the people and practically forced it into their diets. Continue reading

Comment on Meat, Margarine, and Murder by abishop

I agree with everyone else’s comments: it’s surprising to me how the Soviet Union always resorted to shooting protesters expecting new results, yet it never truly solved the problem. Good job describing the back story as to why the Soviet Union was experiencing shortages to begin with; I really like the quote you used. It showed just how quickly and massively the Soviet Union had grown–I find it incredible that the population grew by 29,000,000 in 8 years. I guess this definitely creates the grounds to protest wage cuts and an increase in costs of basic foods, like meat and butter. Continue reading

Comment on The Krushchev Slums by afoutz

I really liked the cartoons you used in your post to show the poor quality of housing most Russians had to suffer to live in. It does make sense that by building new housing areas at the outskirts of the city would stop the congestion of the city. Too … Continue reading

Comment on The Corn Campaign by afoutz

You had a very good intro to this blog post. I think its kind of sad how throughout most of Russian history they have struggled to feed all of its population. You’d think by the 1960’s they would have figured out a sustainable and realistic plan to feed the masses. You also had good quotes to support your information. Continue reading

Comment on The Dark Side of the Space Race by abishop

I have never really considered the first astronauts/cosmonauts to be soldiers, but your argument certainly makes sense. Great links as well, and the little timeline in the beginning was helpful. I normally don’t think about the tragedies associated with the Space Race, so I’m glad you focused so much on it. A lot of the time, the sad parts get lost behind the successes, and we forget about the lives that were lost. Thanks for this post! Continue reading

Comment on The Soviets Didn’t Give a Dam by abishop

Great post! I loved the picture and all the information about how the dam caused environmental troubles. This seems like one more instance where the Soviet Union wanted to prove their superiority over the US and other westernized countries, even though they completely disregarded the environment in the process. The most shocking thing in your post was the fact that workers built the dam while experiencing -72 degree weather. I can’t comprehend that. Props to the workers for building this, but perhaps the Soviet Union should’ve given much more consideration to environmental factors first. Continue reading

Comment on Czech Yourself before you Wreck Yourself by afoutz

I always find it interesting how the intellectuals and students are the first to push beyond what is already set. To me as a student I’m very complacent with what rules are set for me, however I feel like those who are in lower standing should be the ones to push for more. I liked your title and the articles you used to support your post. Continue reading

Comment on The coverup of a Massacre by gracehemmingson

Great post! I’m sure that there were a lot of other killings that they covered up, and you had really great sources linked about this. I liked the connections between this time period and the present day discovery of how many people were actually killed in the massacre. Continue reading

Comment on Feelin’ a lil corny by phillip5

Both corn posts this week were great. This whole concept of a government pushing a foreign food is hilarious to me. It would be like if the US government started making us eat/grow rice. Yeah, we know what rice is and grow quite a bit but it definitely “foreign” to us compared to other countries. I dont think farmers in the states would take that too well. Continue reading
