Deporting Veterans Blog 4

With Veteran’s Day fast approaching, it can be easy to see veterans being honored for their prior service. The country wants to show how much they care but astonishingly, the government has only started trying to take care of all of the prior service members. America has deported an estimated thousand veterans back to their native countries that they may not have seen in many years. They joined the service with expectations of being part of the country they served but once the contract ended they were no longer welcomed. Recently President Biden has announced a plan this year to allow deported veterans to return to the United States.

Technology and Innovation in Higher Learning

Technology has become the bane of existence for some while a savior to others in the higher education field. With the onset of Covid-19, schools were able to utilize the internet as a substitute for classroom learning. This has come with major drawbacks, since the learning management systems now require professors to develop curriculum online and change from their face to face pedagogical skill set. They need to develop skills as ,curriculum designer’, ‘instructional designer’ and ‘technical designer’ for the online work base which may not be easy to do.

With students now returning to the classroom, professors can return to their old pedagogy with consideration of social distancing. This slow return to normal brings with it issues that existed with technology from before the start of the pandemic. Will technology be another educational tool or will it become a hindrance inside the classroom. With the allowance of tablets and laptops students can take notes online and write directly on the slides and visually learning students can have graphs and pictures in their notes. The drawbacks to the allowance of technology is the propensity for distraction. Many professors still will not allow for technology because the distraction of social media and the internet is too high.

Most Oppressed Group Blog 3

For years, the Rohingya people have been facing human rights atrocities by the Myanmar government. The government refuses to recognize them as citizens and refers to them intruders to their country. They have no right to education, ownership, property rights, or land as well as being exposed to human rights injustices like rape and murder. In 2017, the Rohingya were forced out of the country in mass fleeing from genocide. According to soldiers given interviews by the New York Time, the Myanmar Army was given orders to shoot all Rohingya on sight. There are still Rohingya people remaining in Myanmar in forced enslavement camps or missing. Those that were lucky to escape to Bangladesh, according to the UN, are facing homelessness which leaves them very vulnerable to the weather like flooding and cyclones. The Rohingya have faced government sanctioned racism and now are doing their best to rebuild after heavy losses.

Open Access

I decided to choose Reproduction and Fertility by bioscientifica and the Society of Reproduction and Fertility. The editors for the journal are professors at the University of Edinburgh, UK. The goal is to promote research into reproduction and then to disseminate the information among the public. Reproduction can consist of assisted reproduction, fertility preservation, environmental effects on reproductive potential and health, reproductive medicine, reproductive immunology, reproductive toxicology, chronic reproductive conditions, and veterinary reproductive medicine. It allows the researcher to choose between giving a free non-proofed manuscript with a green program or a gold program where the researcher maintains copyright of their research but they have to pay up to $3000 per post. Reproduction and Fertility prides itself on its peer review and accuracy. When I was thinking over open access, I see a high possibility on corruption. I went to look for examples of this and I found a list of predatory journals. Reproduction and Fertility, thankfully, is not on the list. That doesn’t totally mean that it is safe, but upon further research, I believe it is a reliable journal.

Post number 2 Media Equity on Murder or Missing Persons Cases

What makes a murder or missing person’s case worthy of national attention? The case of Gabby Petito has circulated national news media across different networks, but what was so important about her case? The New York Times states that it is because of internet sleuthing and constant social media updates that made her case become famous. When looking at past national news media cases like Elizabeth Smart, Natalie Holloway, Casey Anthony, and Chris Watts a trend tends to appear. Most of the highly publicized cases are of privileged white people. All cases deserve attention and especially in cases of missing persons that still have the ability to be found alive. In 2019, Alicia Navarro, a 14 year old girl with special needs, had disappeared from her home and has not been seen since. Her mother, Jessica Nunez, has not stopped looking for her daughter and posts on TikTok to find her child and publicize the disappearance. The difference is her case is was not as highly publicized.

Ethics in Research

I am submitting my post on Logan Fulford. He worked at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and had falsified immunochemistry and western blot data. He reused and mislabeled images to represent the different proteins. What drew me to the case was that he was working in a children’s hospital and I immediately got defensive as to why someone working with children would misrepresent data. Upon further analysis, I realized the research was on the forkhead box F1 role in prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is known as the old age disease and one of the youngest cases was a 28 year old man according to NCBI. Even though he worked at a children’s hospital, this is a disease that will show up later in the males life. The point of the experiment was that forkhead box F1 would no be present in normal prostate epithelium. If it were true early identification would be made easier. Fulford was found to be fraudulent and has to have two years of probation. The interesting thing is that he was found guilty but if I go to Science Signaling journal it says that the verdict is still pending. The judgement was handed out one and a half years ago but they still never updated the article for false information with it. The article should have in big red letter retracted going across the pages. I assumed journals were better than that when potentially giving out false information.

Equity in the Military Blog #1

The leaders of the United States’ armed forces try hard to have equity among its ranks. The physical readiness tests allow for differences in results based on gender and age and weight limits based on gender and height. The problem is there is a fight on whether that equity should exist. There are members of the military who say if a female cannot perform as well physically as a male then they should not be in the military.  This can lead to females having higher disability rates from the need to prove themselves. Different rules have been put in place to limit the amount anyone would have to carry by instituting 2-man lifts, but still females will have pressure to do the job by themself because someone else has done it. Females can do their job exceedingly well but due to the belief in equality instead of equity, face harder obstacles in the military.

Mission Statement

Old Dominion University Mission Statement

Old Dominion University, located in the City of Norfolk in the metropolitan Hampton Roads region of coastal Virginia, is a dynamic public research institution that serves its students and enriches the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through rigorous academic programs, strategic partnerships, and active civic engagement.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is a public landgrant university serving the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world community. The discovery and dissemination of new knowledge are central to its mission. Through its focus on teaching and learning, research and discovery, and outreach and engagement, the university creates, conveys, and applies knowledge to expand personal growth and opportunity, advance social and community development, foster economic competitiveness, and improve the quality of life.

I chose to compare both Virginia Tech and Old Dominion because I have attended both of the schools. Virginia Tech is a land grant state school with in a rural area. Virginia Tech is a research college that enrolls around 37,000 students. Old Dominion is in Norfolk which one of the larger cities Virginia, and they enroll around 25,000 students. A huge difference is in the student populations. Virginia Tech has a younger student population and supports a huge core cadet community. Old Dominion supports a large veteran population which gives an older student population.

Virginia Tech’s mission statement is extremely expansive, encompassing a high degree of collegiate aspects for the reader to digest. It indicates that the student will internally grow from their studies and have a competitive chance of earning a high paying career. Old Dominion has very little flare in their speech, indicating what the student body will have expected of them. Since ODU deals more in a direct veteran and active-duty population of older students, it is more prudent for them to be direct because they will want to read the frill of Virginia Tech statement less.

Introduction

I am an APSC graduate student working on my non-thesis master’s degree. I have aspirations of working in human embryology clinics. I go by she, her, hers. I am working with cattle ovaries, extracting oocytes, fertilizing, and maturation. I was in the US Navy for six years working mainly on electronics, briefly culinary, and briefly security. None of those options were for me but biology and livestock called to me. I like to spend my free time gardening, painting, and drawing.
