King Saud University and Yale University

King Saud University

Country: Saudi Arabia Riyadh

In their mission statement, The King Saud University claims to provide high-quality education in different disciplines and promote students knowledge in the humanities and social sciences. The statement emphasizes a connection with companies outside to improve service to society. King Saud University goals are to educate students in different disciplines and provide social experiences to prepare better outcomes in education students can share with society. Moreover, King Saud University seeks to “To provide students with a quality education, conduct valuable research, serve the national and international societies and contribute to Saudi Arabia’s society through learning, creativity, the use of current and developing technologies and effective international partnership.” In addition, King Saud University looks to be the best university in the world and a pioneer in the development societal knowledge quality and excellence. The statement is interesting to me because it provides strategy and objectives to graduate student with the best education and “global leadership and excellence in building a knowledge society”

Yale University

Location: New Haven, CT

Country: USA

Type: Private University

The Yale University mission statement focuses on engaging students from national and international backgrounds. Yale’s goals are to educate students in different disciplines and social experiences so as to prepare them to be the world’s leaders and servers. This statement is interesting to me because it provides a strategy to improve students. For example, Yale claims they will work “to develop [student’s] intellectual, moral, civic, and creative capacities to the fullest.” We can see this more specifically by looking at mission statements from different disciplines, such as the School of Architecture, which focuses on “the creation of human environments.” Furthermore, Yale architecture students are “called upon to direct sensitivity, imagination, and intellect to the physical significance of these fundamental issues in designing a coherent environment for people.” Thus, they are treated as professional architects.

Compare/ Contrast

According to their mission statements, the education at the Universities are similar, King Saud University and Yale University have similar educational approaches such as improve education, provide graduate students with the best education, and enhance their knowledge, skills and relevant experience. Both statements also focus on   development of students’ intellectual, moral, civic, and creative capacities to the fullest. Moreover, they provide a supportive learning environment for faculty, staff and students that to be ensuring a sustainable environment for the pursuit of excellence.

The policy of the governments and the University are different depending on the   goals and outcomes in the education. King Saud University is the first university in Saudi Arabia and public institution under imperial the ministry of higher education. But Yale University is private institution for national and international students and the strategy and development are inside the university.

Communications Skills and Assessment

Communication Skills Resource:

One of the important goals of Convergence is to improve the ability of studentsand trainees to communicate with peers, professionals, and the public. Toward this goal, Convergence has adopted the use of assessment rubrics. A rubric is a scoring tool that is used to assess student and trainee performance by a set of criteria and standards.
When a rubric is agreed-upon and communicated prior to the individual’s work being completed, the evaluation process is very clear and transparent to all involved. Rubrics define the expectations and can be used by the entire audience to evaluate a communication.

Convergence will enhance student and trainee learning by improving their knowledge and understanding of health systems and common diseases, including concepts related to clinical and translational research, and their ability to communicate this knowledge to peers, professionals, and the public.
Assessments include instruments to measure learning outcomes and attitude changes for participants across all schools. Additional instruments are offered for use in longitudinal activities within the individual learning communities.

Standards-Based Grading Overview

What Do We Mean by Testing, Assessment, and Evaluation?

When defined within an educational setting, assessment, evaluation, and testing are all used to measure how much of the assigned materials students are mastering, how well student are learning the materials, and how well student are meeting the stated goals and objectives. Although you may believe that assessments only provide instructors with information on which to base a score or grade, assessments also help you to assess your own learning.

Education professionals make distinctions between assessment, evaluation, and testing. However, for the purposes of this tutorial, all you really need to understand is that these are three different terms for referring to the process of figuring out how much you know about a given topic and that each term has a different meaning. To simplify things, we will use the term “assessment” throughout this tutorial to refer to this process of measuring what you know and have learned.

In case you are curious, here are some definitions:

  • test or quiz is used to examine someone’s knowledge of something to determine what he or she knows or has learned. Testing measures the level of skill or knowledge that has been reached.
  • Evaluation is the process of making judgments based on criteria and evidence.
  • Assessment is the process of documenting knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs, usually in measurable terms. The goal of assessment is to make improvements, as opposed to simply being judged. In an educational context, assessment is the process of describing, collecting, recording, scoring, and interpreting information about learning.

Why is Assessment Important?

Hopefully by this point in your life you have discovered that learning can be fun! You have probably also realized that you are constantly learning, whether you are in a classroom, a car, or a kitchen.

Assessment helps you build confidence in your ability to learn.

Perhaps you have heard that the global work culture is changing. Unlike your grandfather, you will probably have a number of different jobs and careers during your lifetime. In order to be successful, you will need to have confidence in your ability to learn and you will need to become a lifelong learner. Assessment plays a key role in developing your confidence in your ability to learn, as well as in developing your lifelong learning skills.

How to understand others

The word understand or understanding is one of the well known word in the English vocabulary. Almost all people knows the meaning of understand. But almost all people also failed to grasp the meaning of understanding. We all the vocabulary, but fail to know the importance. Understanding is one of the most important word to know. If you don’t know it, you’ll probably know nothing. It is also one of the most abused word in the world. There are many definition of understanding but what I’m talking here is the definition that it: “to accept tolerantly or sympathetically.”

Why do we need to understand others?

Understanding is one key for us to live in harmony and peace with each other. The lack of understanding has a very great consequences. War happens because nations do not understand each other. Racial discrimination, broken marriages, crimes, etc. happens because people are misunderstood or people misunderstood other people. As Dr. John C. Maxwell, author of the book entitledRelationships 101, puts it, “Lack of understanding concerning others is a recurrent source of tension in our society.”[1]

Why we fail to understand others?

According to the book Relationships 101 by Dr. John C. Maxwell, this are the reasons why we fail to understand others: fear, self-centeredness, failure to appreciate differences, and failure to acknowledge similarities.

Fear. We fear to understand others. We have doubts and insecurities to know and understand people. We fear those who are on the top and tends to stay on where we are. In order to understand others, we must lay aside our fears and insecurities and try to know other people.

When we are not afraid to understand others, self-centeredness often block our way. We always think of ourselves first, we never think of what is good for others. To understand others we must apply this quote in our priorities:

  • The least important word: I
  • The most important word: We
  • The two most important word: Thank you
  • The three most important word: All is forgiven
  • The four most important word: What is your opinion?
  • The five most important word: You did a good job.
  • THe six most important word: I want to understand you better.[2]

Why is it that some people hate whites, others hate blacks, other still hate yellows? Why is it that there are always discriminations, division, and destruction. It is because we fail to appreciate each other’s differences. We always think of ourselves as superior from others. One key to understanding others is to appreciate each other’s differences.

Failure to acknowledge similarities. There are people who has similarities with what you are. “To foster understanding, think of what your emotions would be if you were in the same position as the person you’re interacting with.”[3]

So, let us start understanding other people and be at peace with everyone. “Knowing what the people need and want is the key to understanding them.”[4] Make it your New Year’s Resolution. For more information and tips to develop your relationship with others, try Dr. John C. Maxwell’s book: Relationship 101: What every leader needs to know.
