Photos: Young Artists opening celebration at the Moss Arts Center
On Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, in the Ruth C. Horton Gallery and the Francis T. Eck Exhibition Corridor, fifth grade students showed off their considerable artistic talents during the opening celebration for their visual art exhibition. Students from Belview, Gilbert Linkous, Harding Avenue, Kipps, Margaret Beeks, and Prices Fork Elementary Schools exhibited work, ranging from self-portraits to their takes on famous works of art.

Local students audition for children’s opera “The Three Feathers”
As part of our 2014-15 season, the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech is presenting a new one-act children’s opera, The Three Feathers.
Patrice Yearwood, founder and artistic director of Blacksburg Children’s Chorale, led the auditions, which spanned several days. Students pictured here auditioned in Yearwood’s home on Thursday, May 29, 2014. Singers include Madelyn Carico (pink shirt) of Falling Branch Elementary School, Kate Hudson (striped dress) of Margaret Beeks Elementary School, Ethan Buhyoff (green shirt) of Auburn Baptist Christian Academy, and Brianna Boyd (yellow shirt) of Auburn Middle School.

Commissioned by the Center for the Arts and composer Lori Laitman and brilliantly retold by librettist Dana Gioia, The Three Feathers is based on a Grimm’s fairytale, creating a mysterious world inhabited by a king, his three princess daughters, and courtiers, and the fantastical underworld kingdom of the Frog Prince and his chorus of rats, bats, and frogs. The story will carry audiences young and old on a journey through song and spectacle. Recommended for ages six years and older.
Performances of The Three Feathers will be held on Friday, October 17, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, October 18, 2014, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, October 19, 2014, at 2 p.m. The Three Feathers will be performed in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, in the Moss Arts Center’s Street and Davis Performance Hall.
