Center for the Arts’ “eye opening” surprise
On Tuesday, May 28, after a long time coming, we revealed our amazing Blacksburg Transit bus wrap!
Faculty and staff of the Center for the Arts and ICAT, along with friends and family members, gathered on the front lawn of the new building on Tuesday for the grand reveal. Several youthful hands (with additional assistance from an eager Adam Soccolich of ICAT) helped to pull off the sheet and reveal the finished product!
The bus was in route as of Thursday, May 30–some of our staff saw it in the wild driving around the Drillfield!
If you happen to see a huge pair of eyes rolling towards you, don’t be afraid–just hop on board.
Did you miss the big reveal? Feel a little left out? Don’t worry–we’ve got a video of the big moment after the jump. More
Dinosaurs come alive on Henderson Lawn
In celebration of Earth Day, the Center for the Arts paired with the Institute of Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) and Radford University, along with partners the Children’s Museum of Blacksburg and FreshAiR for a special kid-friendly day filled with dinosaurs on the Virginia Tech campus.
Yep, you heard right: dinosaurs!
On Sunday, April 21, the day kicked off with the DinoDig, a smartphone-based dinosaur scavenger hunt leading children and their parents and guardians around the Virginia Tech campus from the Graduate Life Center Lawn near Squires Student Center to Henderson Lawn off of Alumni Mall. Ivy, a Blacksburg area student, led her peers via video through the hunt, stopping at several points along the way to educate the kids about what life was like for the dinosaurs.
At one point during the scavenger hunt, the kids even got to see how a dinosaur compared in size to the Torgersen Bridge! (Spoiler: it was pretty big.)
Eventually, the dino-loving kids and their parents ended up at Henderson Lawn for the Dinosaur Petting Zoo, put on by Erth Visual and Physical. Life-like dinosaur puppets made appearances one by one, and the children had the opportunity to pet them and feed them. Finally, the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex burst out of the tent, sending a thrill of exhilaration up each audience member’s spine!
All in all, the students were able to learn about dinosaurs, spend time with their families, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors in early spring.
