  1. Thanks for the update! I was intrigued by the Judge’s description of the meaning of the PhD:

“A Ph.D. brings with it the public perception of being a member of the scientific community and a presumed high level of trustworthiness, the judge said. When a recipient has violated basic principles of good scientific practice, the title is no longer applicable and should be corrected, he said.”

Isn’t it interesting to see the highest academic degree available linked not only to intellectual mastery of a field of knowledge, but also to a specific relationship with the public that promises compliance with scientific community rules of conduct and professional trustworthiness? How often, do you think, PhD candidates in the US are taught about their responsibilities not only toward their research, but also toward society?

    Just fascinating, isn’t it?
