  1. Grants:
    1. Improve the Quality of Life in Rural Communities: USDA. Grants ranging from $250 to $5,000. Due 10/1/13.
    2. Voices for Healthy Kids’ Strategic Campaign Fund: The American Heart Association and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Up to $90,000.
    3. Livable Communities In Appalachia: ARC/EPA.  Small cash grant; $200,000 total. Due 10/4/13.
    4. Rural Community Development Initiative: USDA. $50,000-$300,000. Due 11/12/13.
    5. Funds Available for Wireless Point of Sale Equipment at Farmers’ Markets: USDA. 10/30/13.
  2. Webinars:
    1. Local Food and Local Government. 9/11/13 from 10:00am-12:00pm. This webinar will explore food as a thread weaving through and connecting much of what we do in leading, governing, engaging, and supporting our communities; identify elements of our complex food system and the forces that influence it; and hear experts examine health and economic issues important to local government through the lens of food, something that touches us all.
    2. State of the Food Hub – National survey Results. 9/19/13 at 3:30 pm ET. The National Good Food Network Food Hub Collaboration, including Michigan State University and the Wallace Center, surveyed over 100 food hubs across the country to understand their businesses, impacts, challenges, and innovations.  This webinar accompanies the release of the full report on the state of food hubs in the U.S. today.
    3. Core Nutrition Message Webinar Series. The USDA announced the Core Nutrition Messages Webinar series will take place on 9/19/13 and 10/3/13 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT. The event includes offline exercises that allow you to apply the skills and knowledge acquired from the online sessions. Registration information will be available on the
    4. Food Hubs and Farm to School. 10/17/13 3:30 pm ET. Farm to school programs have been very successful at getting good, healthy, local, whole foods to our nation’s students.  Food hubs hold great promise for filling a gap some programs have found.  It is difficult to add aggregation logistics on top of already-taxed school food service professionals.  Food hubs hold great promise for bridging that gap. Join us for some inspiring examples of successful food hub-assisted farm to school programs.
  3. Conferences
    1. Carolina Farm Stewardship Association Annual Conference: 11/15/13-11/17/13, Durham, North Carolina. Early bird registration is now open. Annual Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA )Sustainable Agriculture Conference. Plan for top-notch speakers, hands-on intensives and tours, great networking opportunities, and local, organic meals.
    2. eXtension is calling for proposals for its national conference with the theme: Innovating and Networking Our Way to a More Engaged Future. Proposals due 11/15/13. The National eXtension Conference will be held jointly with the National Extension Directors and Administrators (NEDA) meeting, 3/24/13-3/28/14.
