A detailed and informative post! The race for atomic supremacy was just the start of the superpowers competing with one another for supremacy. The lust for dominance in this field arguably inspired a space race, to prove their capability in more respectable technology. These two then added to an oil race which emerged between the two as they contested for this resource later in the Cold War in the 3rd world. Oil facilitated their ability to continue dominating the world.
The USSR’s persistence to advance past the USA’s space technology is very interesting, nicely written post! The space race gave the superpowers another way to compete, the USSR were giving a clear indication to the world that communism certainly was a capable ideology. It does however unravel within the decade, that not all was good. In spite of the USSR continuing to have great success in space technology, being the first nation to send a man into space, Yuri Gagarin 1961, there was evidence in Europe of communism not being so much of a utopia. The construction of the Berlin Wall to stop the exodus of East German people happened in the same year.
